April Weather Wise

The saying goes “April Showers Bring May Flowers,” as nice as that may sound, the showers can be rough at times. Are you weather-aware? With the technology we have these days it is easy to stay informed about the weather. Be it sitting on your couch at home watching the weather on tv or via your phone with the many weather apps that are now available.  

But what about some of the less traditional ways of being informed?

Fire Chief, Oliver Dowdle educated us on the “what and why” regarding the sirens we hear often here in town. The siren we hear on Wednesday is what is referred to as a “bump test,” it sounds for approximately 15 seconds. The siren is remotely activated by the Weather Service out of Greenville/Spartanburg to only test for connectivity.

The siren on Saturday will sound for approximately 45 seconds and is a test conducted by the fire department, again to ensure connectivity.

In the event a tornado warning is issued anywhere in York County by the National Weather Service the siren will sound for approximately 5 minutes. These sirens are indication to go inside, seek shelter and tune in to your tv and/or radio for weather updates.
