Sharon Volunteer Fire Department

Sharon Fire Department was organized in 1954 with the first truck, being a 1946 Chevrolet housed in the back of Town Hall.  In the late 1950’s a two-bay block building was built where the present station is located.  The county then gave Sharon a truck in 1958 and that was the only truck until 1974.  The water system was established in the 1960’s.  Until the water system was established, the five hundred gallons on the truck was all that they had and if it didn’t put the fire out, the home just burnt down.  Sharon purchased its first new fire truck in 1974, we still have that truck today.  Back in the day, Gordan Wilson, who owned a service station where the Sharon Grill is located was the first fire chief and he had a phone along with a couple others and that is how they were notified of a fire.

In the late 70’s early 80’s things started to change. The department got more volunteers and a few more trucks and the department received the first few sets of turn out gear and pagers to notify members of a call. We have had many dedicated volunteers over the years that were willing to help in the community.

Fast forward to the present time.  We have come a long way since our humble beginnings, and it is due to the committed members and the help of the community. We currently have around 25 volunteers. This includes firefighters, members in a supporting role and administrative volunteers. We have grown and now have two stations.   The other station is located on Hord Road. We have three engines, two tankers, three grass trucks, and a service truck.  Piedmont EMS also has an ambulance stationed at the fire department in Sharon.

We are always looking for volunteers that are dedicated to helping the community.  Firefighter training requires two hundred plus hours of training to be considered an interior firefighter. We have supportive roles available as well.  We have a few firefighters that have been part of the department for over forty years and some that have joined in the last few months. So, if interested contact us by calling on myself or one of our other officers, visit our Facebook page or stop by the station for more information.
